DIY Technicolor barbie dream hair yes please!!! A craft for the whole family!

Updated: Nov 14, 2018

So, I saved all of my barbies and accessories hoping to one day have a little girl to pass my prized collection of barbie crap to. My daughter who is now 3 has gotten a peek into the barbie trunk twice now as I saved the day with some little thing she really wanted for her barbie like shoes since her collection is just beginning. When I first had the idea to save it all it seemed like everything was still so perfect . Yet looking at it now, despite how much care I took packing them, more then a few are well loved. Luckily being 3 she doesn't care so it's a win win right now. I have been trying to rehab the barbies a bit as we pull them out. Well we pulled out baby Kelly who was given the worst haircut in barbie herstory I remember thinking wtf back then. As I'm looking at this thing once again thinking wtf is up with this hair she says the baby needs pink hair....and I'm thinking you know what you are absolutely right she needs pink hair. Luckily when the hair chalk craze started I bought a pallet off of Ebay. Come to find out hair chalk is just the same chalk you use with pastels in art.

You can get these pretty much anywhere at this point art stores, craft stores, beauty supply stores, even your chain look for hair chalk or hit the art section.

This is a fun mindless activity that kids and adults can do. You can put as much or as little work as you want into it.

So I grabbed a barbie with light hair that needed a new look..

Brush out the hair the best you can. I use detangle or fabric softener when needed but don't soak the hair you want it to be dry - lightly sprayed so the chalk doesn't get too pasty.

Pull out a section of hair and dip your chalk into a little water like you would a paintbrush.

Then lay your chunk of hair across some newspaper or paper towels. Smooth the hair out and hold the ends down with your hand so you have some traction. Go from root to tip.

Using the side of your chalk will get you more coverage quicker. Just dip the part of the chalk you want to use in water and try not to get it too wet.

Make sure when doing full coverage you flip the hair over and do the back . You can alter colors and do as much or as little as you want.

I recommend brushing and again lightly spraying the hair after to keep it workable for kids because chalk does dry hair out. This process would work for dolls too. A damp rag or paper towel will clean up any chalk that gets on the barbie face or body.

I personally like to braid the barbie hair to cut down on maintenance.

I'm thinking a mermaid themed one next!
